News21

2009 Carnegie-Knight Initiative on the Future of Journalism Education

I've been following Milan and Scot Hacker's twitter and delicous accounts and have been inspired by a lot of the great discoveries that they've been noticing out there on the web.

This has me thinking, it would be most valuable if we created an easy way to discover the account name or feed address for everyone in the projects' status updates, bookmarks, photo and video sharing accounts, shared reader items, etc. (that is everyone who was interested in making that information public).

A tag for twitter updates and blog posts, like #News21 might also be useful.

Your thoughts?

Here is an article from Read Write Web that you might find interesting: "How We Use Twitter for Journalism"

The benefit of tagging blog posts is that you can use technorati to easily view news21 related content across multiple blogs and services, like this: http://www.technorati.com/tag/news21

A common tag sounds like a great idea.

I'm curious if there is an easy way to form a group on twitter? So we can all follow people in the news21 program without tracking down each member?

Jeremy,

I think the best way to follow posts about news21 on twitter would be through using a twitter search, like this:

http://search.twitter.com/search?q=news21

or, using your rss reader of choice, you could also subscribe to the rss feed for this same twitter search:

http://search.twitter.com/search.atom?q=news21

You can also subscribe to the rss feed for the news21 ning site here:

http://news21.ning.com/activity/log/list?fmt=rss

To follow up on my initial post, it appears that you may cast a wider net in looking for what people are saying about news21 on blogs by of this technorati search instead:

http://technorati.com/search/news21?language=en

Similarly, you can also subscribe to an rss feed of this same search here:

http://feeds.technorati.com/search/news21?language=en

(This searches for news21 generically anywhere in the text of a blog post, not just in a tag).

Feel free to try this out and let me know what you think.

One additional idea comes to mind, we could add a News21 section to http://twitterpacks.pbwiki.com/ perhaps as a subcategory here:

http://twitterpacks.pbwiki.com/New+Media,+Social+Media

This way, people could voluntarily add their twitter user account to the list.

Jeremy,

I just ran across a service which may allow us to do this:

http://grouptweet.com/

"GroupTweet is constantly listening for direct texts sent to your group's Twitter account. When a direct text is received, GroupTweet instantly publishes it as a tweet from the group account. Since all of your group members are following the group's Twitter account, they will each receive the message."

I will find out who manages the twitter account for News21 and see how we can best make use of this. I'll let you know when it's ready for testing...

If you would like to read the full article where this was mentioned, see: How Journalism Students Used Twitter to Report on Australian Elections

I'll put some more detailed instructions about this online shortly, but for the moment...

I just signed up the News21 twitter account at http://grouptweet.com

Those following News21 (and who are followed back) send a direct message to News21 from your twitter account and you will see this message appear at http://twitter.com/news21

The result is that you do not have to follow everyone in the class, nor do you have to do any fancy searches to find news21 tweets. We all can send our tweets to the News21 account.

Let's give this a try and see how it works out.

What do you think of using Publish2.com to link-share as a network? In addition to simply exchanging leads, I also think this would also be good to help us to define common taxonomies for categorizing stories, issues and events.

Evan had an idea for using delicious to trade links to resources on stories. I have some questions on how to achieve what he was looking to do, namely filter all of delicious for more than one tag and create rss feeds for these tag combinations, such as news21/immigration/guns , news21/demographics/hispanic etc.

Looks like you can combine a news21 tag with other topics, such as:

http://delicious.com/tag/news21+twitter

And, if need be, use an RSS feed of this:

http://feeds.delicious.com/v2/rss/tag/news21+twitter?count=15

We should encourage this.
