The fighting and kidnappings in Villanueva, Zacatecas got so bad the people of the town called on the army to take over for the police. Even that doesn't seem to be helping. According to a study, 75% of towns in the state are decreasing in population as people flee the area. In a recent attack on army forces, one of the attackers was a former police officer, and other officers may have aided the attackers.

The Arizona Daily Star has a project called Death on the Border -- and part of the package is a searchable database of the people who have died crossing the border based on county medical examiner reports. Interestingly, the location the body was found is also in the database, sometimes in GIS coordinates.

It's not mapped, and it hasn't been updated since September, but it's still worth a look.

Curiously large amount of news just today:
Napolitano "outlines" immigration policy (she just deferred to The President and Congress for half of her responses)

Phoenix just declared kidnap capital!

AZ DPS got tipped to a human smuggling operation turned kidnapping. Detained 16 illegal immigrants, arrested 3 coyotes.

As if this weren't enough:

Hispanic male kidnapped at gunpoint Saturday in the middle of south Phoenix!

A potentially helpful resource. The Border Counties Coalition is a nonpartisan, consensus-based policy and technical forum addressing the challenges facing county governments located on the United States/Mexico Border. Updates were made in fall 2007. Might be helpful.
