For the fourth year running, I am managing editor of the Columbia News21 project, having overseen the 2008 project on immigration and the election, the 2007 project on religion in America and the 2006 project on homeland security.
I currently teach new media journalism at Columbia Journalism School, and science, health and environment reporting at NYU’s graduate journalism program. I started my foray as an educator in India in 2002 as a Ford Environmental Journalism Fellow.
Outside of my teaching work, I'm an independent digital media consultant with a client list including former NBC Universal Chairman & CEO Bob Wright, the Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri, J-Lab: Institute for Interactive Journalism at American University, Knight Digital Media Center, Yale University, Marist Institute for Public Opinion, The Donald & Shelley Rubin Foundation, and Rodale Inc., as well as local news organizations. Prior to going solo in 2005, I worked for 25 years in newsrooms in New York and Washington, most recently as senior producer at ABCNews.com.
I am also co-founder of a citizen journalism training project, I, Reporter, which in 2007 was one of the pioneering winners of the Knight News Challenge Award. I'm a contributing blogger on the group weblog E-Media Tidbits and serves on the editorial advisory board member of the Society of Environmental Journalists. I've traveled extensively in Western Europe and South Asia and hold a master’s degree in international affairs from the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy in Boston and a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Boston University.
