In our class discussions here about the demographics of metropolitan areas, one of the students, Kim Geiger, came up with an idea that might work for the all-schools collaboration on a national project.

The student suggested drawing up a list of 20 or so types of important demographic or other data on a town or city that is not accessible on Internet sites such as the Census Bureau's. My book is "America By the Numbers: A Field Guide to the U.S. Population," which is bascially a compendium of interesting data from the 2000 census and a number of late 90s surveys (the book came out in 2001). It's by William Frey, a demographer a the U. Mich. Population Studies Center, and the founder of the Social Science Data Analysis Network, and by two of his colleagues at SSDAN.
